Between 1455 and Henry VII’s victory at the Battle of Bosworth in 1585 England had been at war with its self in a series of dynastic battles between the opposing branches of the House of Plantagenet.  The rivals were the House of Lancaster and the House of York.

Apart from some brief unrest early in the reign of Henry VII military conflict had avoided with the establishment of a strong and efficient system government.
