The Treaty of the More was concluded on 30 August 1525 between England and the Regent of France during Francis I’s captivity, Louise of Savoy, she was represented in England by John Brinon and John Joachim. The agreement was celebrated by Henry and the French ambassadors at The More (More Park), near Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, a palace owned Cardinal Thomas Wolsey.
Negotiated by Wolsey England, agreed to give up some territorial claims on France, in return a substantial pension from the French. France settled what was due to Henry VIII's sister, Mary, dowager queen of France. England also agreed to negotiate for the release of King Francis who was being held in Spain by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain. England had been threatened by troubled by the threat of a renewal of the "Auld Alliance" between France and Scotland, France therefore also agreed to stop the Franco- Scottish Duke of Albany from returning to Scotland. |
