The League of Torgau was an alliance of German princes, including Philip of Hesse and John of Saxony, which was formed on 27 February 1526 by Lutheran adherents within the Holy Roman Empire, to oppose the terms set forth in the Edict of Worms.
Along with a number of other German towns, at the time, Torgau town council closed all its cloisters in 1523. Iconoclastic citizens of Torgau destroyed the paintings and statues of saints in the churches and stormed the Franciscan monastery.
As early as 1519, the first baptism in the German language was celebrated at Nikolai Church in Torgau and Katharina von Bora, the wife of Martin Luther is buried at St Mary’s Church in the town.
