The year is 1536, and the king’s men have arrived to close monastic houses plunder their possessions and seize the buildings for the king. Henry VIII’ religious changes are ripping the heart out of England.
Guy Kyme is an entrepreneur, a self-made adventurer and will not allow the political and religious upheaval to distract him from furthering the success of his business. He is undaunted and remains resolute in his ambition to use his new-made wealth to persuade Elizabeth (Bess) Blount to take his hand in marriage.
Bess, once, was Henry VIII’s mistress and is the mother of his son Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond. Henry VIII’s duplicity has angered Bess. The man with whom she once shared a bed and who promised their son the crown of England has shown that he is intent on the ruination of the realm with his new laws and tyrannical rule.
Unless his reforms are stopped, all the monasteries will be razed to the ground, and so the talk is of rebellion led by the royal bastard and plans are laid for the most powerful English army ever raised to fight his father for the right to rule the kingdom.
A decade has passed since Bess’s passion with Henry and the days when his courtiers admired her as the most beautiful woman in England. Now she is drawn to Guy Kyme, but is the attraction for his love or is Guy a means to rekindle a torch she carries for the king?
There is only one certainty. When the late flowers of summer give way to the fruits of autumn, fifty thousand Englishman will take up arms and rise against Henry VIII.
All will rise for The Pilgrim’s Rebellion.
