Holbein and the Images of Henry VIII
The Whitehall Mural - Template for the Image of Henry VIII
Or is it?
This is a copy by Remigius van Leemput painted, in about 1667, of a mural once emblazoned on a wall at Whitehall Palace. The copy was fortuitously commissioned by Charles II because Whitehall Palace burnt down on 1698, and the mural went up in smoke with it.
The Leemput copy is an 88.9 x 99.2 cm (35 x 39 ins) reproduction of Hans Holbein's life-size artwork depicting Henry VIII, his third wife Jane Seymour, Henry's father Henry VII and mother Elizabeth of York.
Below are six interpretations of Henry VIII standing alone, probably painted after his death, all derived from the Holbein’s Whitehall Mural. They were most likely produced from patterns taken from Holbein’s original work and then circulated among artists and workshops
Holbein’s cartoon, his draft version, in ink and watercolour was accepted by the National Portrait Gallery (in lieu of tax) in 1957, see below.
