Born Giuliano della Rovere and nicknamed ‘The Fearsome Pope’ and ‘The Warrior Pope’, Julius II had been pope since 1 November 1503. His papacy was marked by an active foreign policy, ambitious building projects and patronage for the arts. He commissioned the destruction and rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica and Michelangelo’s decoration of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Battle of Flodden

Led by Catherine, Queen Regent of England, Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey, his son Thomas Howard, Lord High Admiral, Thomas Dacre, second Baron Dacre, Sir Edward Stanley, Marmaduke Constable and Edmund Howard, the Scots were defeated at Flodden while Henry was in France. Catherine was regent in his absence and James IV, King of Scotland, married to Henry VIII's sister Margaret, was killed.

At Mechelen, an agreement was reached, negotiated by Thomas Boleyn and Margaret Habsburg, that the pope, Maximilian, Ferdinand and Henry would all attack France from different sides. Sworn at St Paul's on 25 April. An ambassador signed for Ferdinand.

Lord Admiral Sir Edward Howard Drowned

During fighting with the French, Admiral Edward Howard was forced overboard and drowned because of the weight of his armour. Both his body and his silver whistle, the Lord Admiral's badge of office, were found three days later and delivered to Bidoux at Le Conquet, who sent the armour as a trophy to Princess Claude, the French king's daughter and Francis I’s future wife, and the whistle to Queen Anne.
