Fifth Session of Reformation Parliament

Parliament is reconvened on 15 January 1534 until 30 March 1534.

Dowager Catherine

Catherine was to be titled ‘Dowager Princess of Wales'.

Act in  Restraint of Annates

9 March 1534
Parliament passes Act in Restraint of Annates. All payments to the pope cease at this stage; however, no provision is made for payment of them to the king. 

Act and an Oath of Succession 

23 March 1534
The (first) Act of Succession secured the succession of the children of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, to which the whole nation had to swear an oath. Rejecting the oath was made treasonous. Mary was excluded and Princess Elizabeth was made his heir.

Easter – Anabaptist King at Munster

Anabaptist leader and polygamist John of Leiden was king of the German city of Munster. He took sixteen wives and is alleged to have decapitated another who rejected him.

Cromwell Rising

Confirmed Principal Secretary and Chief Minister.

More & Fisher Arrested

12 April 1534
John Fisher and Thomas More refused to sign the succession oath and were imprisoned in the Tower of
London before trial.

Nun of Kent Executed

20 April 1534
Elizabeth Barton, the so-called Holy Maid or Nun of Kent, was executed for preaching against the king's marriage.

Catherine and Mary Refused to Sign

Catherine and Mary also refuse to sign the oath.Catherine is banished to Kimbolton Castle near Huntingdon

Is Anne Pregnant?

27 February 1534 
Extract from the dispatch from Chapuys to Charles V.
Since the king began to doubt whether his lady was enccintc [pregnant] or not, he has renewed and increased the love he formerly had for a very beautiful damsel of the Court; and because the said lady (demoiselle, qu. dame ?) wished to drive her away, the king has been very angry, telling his said lady (dame) that she had good reason to be content with what he had done for her, which he would not do now if the thing were to begin, and that she should consider from what she had come, and several other things. To which it is not well to attach too much importance, considering the changeable character of the said king and the craft of the said lady, who knows well how to manage him.

Pope Clement VII Dead

25 September 1534
Giulio di Giuliano de’ Medici is dead. Some said he was poisoned.

Sixth Session of Reformation Parliament

3 November until 18 December 1534
Lord Darcy, because of his 'age and debilities', did not attend.

New Pope - Paul III

13 October 1534
Alexander Farnese elected Pope Paul III.

Act of Supremacy

November 1534. 
Parliament confirms that Henry VIII is the supreme head of the church in England

Treason Act

Passing of the Treason Act quickly followed the Act of Royal Supremacy.

Act in  Restraint of Annates

November 1534
Next a bill annexed first fruits and clerical tenths (a tax of 10%) to the crown. The preamble remains a 'triumph of rhetorical skill and ingenuity.’

More & Fisher

November 1534
The wording of the Oath of Royal Supremacy was introduced to parliament. More and Fisher remained in
prison because of their refusal to sign oaths.
